Microsoft quietly posted a Windows XP SP2 patch to make surfing public wireless hotspots safer, but did not include it with the December security updates released Tuesday and has not posted it as a download from Microsoft Update.
The update fixes a long-standing security problem in Windows XP SP2, which starts an automatic scan for wireless networks when a laptop boots or powers up from hibernation. Adobe is offering for preview the latest version of its popular Photoshop image-editing software, deigned as a universal application that will work with the latest Intel-powered Mac machines as well as with Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Photoshop CS3 beta includes a prerelease version of a major upgrade to Adobe Bridge, as well as a preview release of the all-new Adobe Device Central. Google got into the website registry business as the Internet juggernaut set out to add momentum to its free online software offerings.

A computer worm is attacking some business PCs through a flaw in antivirus software by Symantec Corp., a security company warned Friday.

The reception of Nintendo’s Wii video game console has been enthusiastic — too enthusiastic, apparently, for the straps that are supposed to keep the game controllers in the hands of players.
After widespread reports of controllers flying out of the hands of overly energetic players to cause a Wii bit of damage to TV sets, walls and bystanders, Nintendo is recalling 3.2 million straps to replace them with tougher stuff.
