Google buys Internet news delivery firm FeedBurner

Google announced Friday that it bought FeedBurner, a firm specializing in delivering podcasts, weblogs, news and advertising to Internet browsers.

Chicago-based FeedBurner is a “web feed” firm that lets online publishers constantly send updated news, commentary and other content directly to readers with tools such as Really Simple Syndication (RSS).

“We are thrilled with this acquisition,” Google vice president of product management Susan Wojcicki said during a conference call with reporters. (more…)

Google and YouTube remain separate

Google says its YouTube viral video-sharing site, acquired last year for $1.65 billion in stock, will remain an independent subsidiary of Google and continue to operate separately.

Most of the user-generated and premium, licensed content from the likes of CBS for example, will be hosted on YouTube, the company says. YouTube, meanwhile, will benefit from future Google Video innovations, including video search, monetization and distribution. (more…)

Google overtakes Yahoo in user visits

Google overtook Yahoo as the second most popular Internet destination for Web surfers worldwide in November, while Microsoft held on to the top spot, industry tracker ComScore reported.

Slightly more than 736 million people around the world traveled the Internet last month, with 475.5 million of them visiting Google websites and 475.2 million going to Yahoo online properties, according to ComScore. (more…)

Search specialist Google has given its blogging software a major upgrade, adding privacy features, new templates, and tighter integration with Google’s other services.

With the new Blogger toolkit, now out of beta, users can add photos and other information without HTML expertise. More advanced users can create custom templates in an array of type fonts and colors. (more…)

Google got into the website registry business as the Internet juggernaut set out to add momentum to its free online software offerings.

Google teamed with domain registry firms GoDaddy.com and eNom to create an application that enables people to claim their own .com, .net, .org, or .info realms for a cost of 10 dollars annually. (more…)
