Sanyo Unveils World’s First Waterproof Video Camera, Xacti

Just in time for the Japanese summer Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. will launch in June a waterproof version of its Xacti digital video camera.

The DMX-CA65 can be fully submerged to a depth of 1.5 meters and still keep on recording, the company said Thursday. That’s significantly better than a model launched last year that was able to withstand splashes of water but not a dunking. (more…)

Sony develops film-thin display

TOKYO – In the race for ever thinner displays for TVs, cell phones and other gadgets, Sony may have developed one to beat them all – a razor-thin display that bends like paper while showing full-color video.
Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE – news). posted video of the new display on its Web page Friday. The display is being held up by a hand that’s squeezing the 0.3 millimeter, or 0.01 inch, display, while showing color video of a bicyclist stuntman, picturesque lake and other images.

Sony will present the research and video at an academic symposium in Long Beach, California, for the Society for Information Display this week, the Japanese electronics and entertainment company said in a release.

McCartney’s “Memory” goes digital

Paul McCartney’s new album, “Memory Almost Full,” will be his first solo release available for download and streaming on PCs and mobile phones.

McCartney also has told Billboard that a deal to finally make the Beatles catalog available for sale online is “virtually settled.”

McCartney added, “I don’t want to pre-empt anything, but we’re well on the way to something happening there, which is very exciting.” (more…)

Microsoft pursuing Yahoo

Microsoft Corp. is resuming its pursuit of search engine operator Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO – news) that could help it better compete with Web search leader Google Inc., published reports said Friday.

Yahoo shares surged more than 15 percent in midday trading.

The New York Post reported Friday that Microsoft has asked Yahoo to enter formal negotiations for an acquisition that could be worth $50 billion. Yahoo’s market capitalization was about $38 billion on Thursday. (more…)
